Rapid City, S.D.; Feb. 4, 2010
--- Kaycee Feild wowed the crowd at the 2009 National
Finals Rodeo by winning first or second in three rounds, and he was back to
rousing fans again in Rapid City during the first performance of the Black
Hills Stock Show Rodeo.
The fourth-year professional from Payson, Utah, combined with Southwick
Rodeo’s bronc Hard Times for a whopping 87 points to take the early lead in the
bareback riding. Feild, a collegiate national champion just two years ago, was
an early fan favorite even without his recent high-scoring rides.
He’s the son of pro rodeo Hall of Famer Louis Feild, who won five world
championships in the 1980s – two in bareback riding and two in the prestigious
all-around category.
The other big moves of the rodeo on Thursday night were made by the
defending world champion team ropers and South Dakota’s own Tierney boys. The world
champs from Oklahoma, Nick Sartain and Kollin VanOhn, clocked the fastest time
of the rodeo all week with a 4.3-second run, which was then matched by Jess and
Paul David Tierney, from Hermosa and Oral, S.D. The two teams are tied for the
lead in the second round of the team roping.
All timed-event contestants in Rapid City compete in two long rounds,
with roughstock riders competing just once. The second performance begins at 1
p.m. Friday, followed by a 7 p.m. performance and matinee and evening
performances again on Saturday.
A host of NFR-qualifying
professional rodeo athletes are scheduled to compete Friday at 1 p.m.,
including Chris Harris, Evan Jayne, and Cleve Schmidt of Piedmont in bareback
riding; Douglas Duncan and Ft. Pierre’s rising star Taylor Cowan in bull
riding; and a who’s who of team roping that includes Garrett Tonnozi and Kinney
Harrel; twins Jake and Jim Cooper; Brandon Beers and defending Bob Feist
Invitational champion Ryan Motes; brothers Riley and Brady Minor; and Steve
Purcella and Jhett Johnson.
On Friday at 7 p.m., the all-star
lineup of roughstock riders includes bareback riders Royce Ford, Josi Young,
Tom McFarland, Wes Stevenson and former world champion Kelly Timberman; bull
riders Myron Duarte, Ted Bert, Wesley Silcox, Steve Woolsey and Belvidere’s
recent Xtreme Bulls champ Clay Hindman. The saddle bronc riding will feature
reserve 2009 champ of the world Cody Wright, Rusty Allen, Jeff Willert of
Belvidere, Chad Ferley of Oelrichs, and Chet Johnson of Gillette.
